DIY Ombre Dress

IMG_3045 IMG_3051  IMG_3057 IMG_3067
My husband bought a beautiful dress from greenheart for my birthday. Their clothing is fair trade and this dress is made out of recycled flour sacks. I love it, but unfortunately when I washed it, all of the dye washed out. It was a beautiful sage color. The shop owners are wonderful and refunded us and let me keep the dress! So, I decided to try my hand at dyeing it and might as well go all in, let's try ombre!

Materials:
2 Packets of Dylon Dye
Salt
Water
Bucket
Garment
Rubber Gloves
Pole

Directions:
Dissolve dye according to the package, I used two cups of hot water. Fill bucket with water and a few spoonfuls of salt and stir. Add the dye and mix throughly. Place entire dress in water and stir for 15 minutes. Then place straps on a pole, wooden dowel or broomstick so that 3/4 of the dress is still in the dye. I wrapped tape around the pole and taped it to a ladder. Stir occasionally for 15 minutes. Now raise the dress half way out of the dye, stir occasionally for 15 minutes. Raise the dress again, this time so just 1/4 of the dress is in the dye and stir for the final 15 minutes. Take dress out of dye and rinse until water runs clear. Wash in the washing machine on warm and hang to dry.

It's an involved process but I love the way it turned out, and it's really not difficult!

So creative. I think it turned out perfect! And thanks for letting me know what you used. I have some white curtains that I want to dye ombre...and now I know what to use. :)

This looks superb! I love how it turned out even better now. I had no idea ombre was as easy as you make it seem! Did you use a single packet of dye or is it a combination of dye colors? I really adore the colors. Great job :)
